Just raging over some fiction character

Arghh, just as I started to like the tv-series "Dead like me". But they have this one episode about a person dying (there's always someone dying, it's sort of the point with the whole story, since the main characters are reapers) who was supposed to be transgender. Well, I don't know what to make of it, to be perfectly honest, cause they really screwed it up.

I believe that show is a few years old (maybe from 2005 or something like that) and it was fairly unusual to depict transgender people in movies and such back then. However, they could have read up on the issue or something. Checked their facts. Anyway, this person went on about how they, I quote: "wanted to be a woman" when they were alive, which to me is just... huh?

I was like, what the fuck, why don't you just try and change things if it's at all important to you? Well, I can understand it's not so easy for everyone to just come out of the closet, but this person... something was terribly wrong with the way the handled the issue. I suppose this character was a transsexual mtf, but I'm not sure since that was never stated. Only that this obviously masculine character was going in for plastic surgery of some kind, and that they wanted to be a woman. (They didn't get to have the surgery because they were killed by a stiletto shoe in the waiting room).

The makers of this particular show seemed to think that transgendered people want to be the opposite sex, as if it was a choice. This character was also completely open about their situation, but still lived as male. That, is a thorn in my side. I felt a bit ashamed for their account, to be honest. I hate it when they do that in movies and tv-series. When they build a character on misconceptions made by transphobic's and clueless cisgender people. Facepalm, damn it!

Oh well, I don't think I'll stop watching the show just because of this one episode with that one character who has now crossed over to the other side (no, no pun intended) and won't be coming back in later episodes. Just felt I needed to rage a little over this. Because this isn't an unknown phenomena in movies and tv-series, that the makers screw up their transgender characters. It's not so fucking strange that everyone who doesn't have a transgender friend seem to have misconceptions about this sort of thing. Okay, I think I've raged enough now.
